Nicholas Tan isn’t your typical fashion mogul. With a background as a national swimmer and a Harvard biology degree, his path to founding Aupen—a handbag brand adored by celebrities—was anything but conventional. Tan’s journey is a testament to the power of courage, creativity, and a dash of serendipity.
After cutting his teeth in a showroom in Asia, Tan decided to leap into the unknown. “It was about finding that last bit of courage,” he reflects, sipping coffee in a Paris hotel. In November 2022, he launched Aupen, a brand whose name—a blend of “authentic” and “open”—reflects its mission to inspire openness and authenticity. Within months, A-listers like Taylor Swift and Hailey Bieber were spotted flaunting his designs, catapulting Aupen into the spotlight.
Now, Tan is venturing into jewelry with the help of LVMH Métiers d’Art. Their debut collection features the Sinner Earrings, a sleek, S-curve design inspired by the Year of the Snake. Crafted with gold-tone metal and crystals, these pieces are a subtle nod to Tan’s sculptural approach to design. “I imagine bags as clay,” he says, describing his creative process. “Sometimes, I even make paper molds to bring them to life.”
Tan’s designs thrive on versatility. “A bag should transform an outfit effortlessly,” he explains. Whether it’s a red carpet event or a casual day out, Aupen’s creations seamlessly blend into any wardrobe. The brand’s most popular piece, The Nirvana, embodies this ethos. Featuring a braided texture and a seed-shaped charm, it symbolizes growth—both for the brand and its wearers.
With LVMH’s mentorship, Aupen is refining its craftsmanship, ensuring every piece meets luxury standards. Tan’s approach remains refreshingly unconventional: “We don’t follow the fashion calendar. We design by drops, inspired by the streets of Paris, New York, and Singapore.” For Tan, the journey is as important as the destination. “This whole experience has been surreal,” he admits. “I didn’t think I’d be here today.”
